The Black Swan Restaurant

Overview

Hailed as a genius by acolytes as varied as Jimmy Page and Devendra Banhart, this British singer-guitarist has spent the better part of four decades melding carefully honed traditionalism and utterly unfettered originality into a style that presaged what's become codified as freak-folk. Jansch gets more than a little help from his friends here, a guest list that includes Beth Orton (the vocalist on a triptych of spellbinding tunes, most notably the traditional 'Katie Cruel') and David Roback (who provides spooky slide guitar counterpoint on 'When the Sun Comes Up'), but he ever-so-subtly asserts himself again and again as the real star of the show. That's clear in the intricately Elizabethan picking that imbues 'Magdalina's Dance' and in the low-slung, raffish riffing of 'Bring Your Religion,' on which he spars affably with his keyboardist son, Adam. While it's not really a party album -- other than the sarcasm-laced, White House-directed 'Texas Cowboy Blues,' there aren't all that many winks and nods -- The Black Swan generates a wake that beckons the listener to dive right in.
