“It was an absolutely amazing show. People couldn’t even realize the time as it went by very fast,” Bhavini Joshi, CEO of the Instant Karma event company, told India-West after the show. “People want more of them, so we have decided that we will be bringing them back again this year for an unplugged version of a duet-only concert.”
The concert began on time with up-beat performances by “K for Kishore” show finalist Chetan Rana and “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Bengal” singer Anuradha Ghosh, who warmed up the enthusiastic crowd of music lovers with songs such as “Chura Liya” and “Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai.”
The sound of the love ballad, “Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain,” from the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Pardes,” signaled Kumar Sanu’s arrival on the stage. The musical powerhouse took over the stage right after providing thorough entertainment for the next 90 minutes to the cheering and whistling crowd, proving that the singer is still a favorite artist of many music lovers.
“San Jose is the first city of our U.S. tour,” he said amid deafening cheers. “Imagine you still want to hear the songs that I sung more than 25 years ago, it’s amazing. Today’s films have good music, but the lyrics are getting vulgar.”
He treated his fans to blockbuster hits such as “Ek Sanam Chahiye Aashiqui Ke Liye,” “Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen,” “Tujhe Dekha Toh Yej Jaana Sanam,” “Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin,” “Sochenge Tumhe Pyaar Kare Ki Nahin” and “Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaye.”

The singer shared personal anecdotes about his music career with the audience, and his matter-of-fact attitude made the comments more interesting. One such instance he related was when he went to record “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha” with R.D. Burman: He was turned away by the music stalwart, because he didn’t want a disheveled musician with an unshaven face to render such a melodious song.
Kumar Sanu’s career, as a Bollywood playback singer, started over 25 years ago. From Shah Rukh Khan to Akshay Kumar to Aamir Khan, the prolific singer lent his voice to the majority of Bollywood actors in the 1990s and early 2000s. A winner of five consecutive Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer awards, the singer also holds the Guinness World Record for recording the maximum number of songs in a day, 28.
The artist was accompanied by a symphony orchestra, who he said recorded several film scores with him, including the ones that catapulted him to stardom.
With a successful career spanning three decades, melody queen Alka Yagnik has ruled the hearts of millions of fans singing for top Bollywood heroines like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Deepika Padukone. She was introduced via a slide show featuring a host of film personalities, including Amitabh Bachchan, Sonu Nigam, A.R. Rahman and Lata Mangeshkar, who showered accolades on the songstress.
Yagnik, who was excited to be back in the San Francisco Bay Area, said the audience was “very warm, and she loved to perform” here.
Sporting a pink sequined anarkali and side-swept hair, she serenaded the crowd with the romantic ballad “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” in her opening act and followed it up with “Akele Hain Toh Kya Gum Hai” from “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak,” and “Gali Mein Aaj Chand Nikala” from “Zakhm” to the more recent “Agar Tum Saath Ho” from “Tamasha.”
The crowd erupted when the pitch-perfect singer performed “Ek Do Teen” from the 1988 film, “Tezaab.”
With over 17,000 songs to her credit, the ‘90s diva with a youthful, soothing voice, is a two-time National Award winner and a seven-time winner of the Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer award and recipient of several other awards.
A short intermission and an outfit change later, the singer returned to the stage with her co-singer of many hit films, Kumar Sanu.
Churning out a string of hits from their music career spanning more than two decades, the singers rocked the venue and had the audience, many of whom were Indian American, swaying and singing along in no time to hits like “Ladki Badi Anjani Hai” and “Odhani Odh Ke Nachu.”
The evening left the Bay Area residents yearning for more as they applauded and danced to the energetic and entertaining songs, often recognizing songs upon hearing just the opening chords.
A day before the show, the singers interacted with the media at a press conference April 1 at the Pacific Sound and Event Production office in Fremont, where the two briefed the media about the upcoming show and also talked about how the music scene in India has changed over the years along with their experience singing for top actors. Kumar Sanu said he was working on a couple of projects and had just finished working on an album with singer Mika.
Along with having the duo return to the city, Instant Karma will also be bringing together singer Hariharan and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain for a concert May 6 in San Jose.
Sponsors of the musical night included Taj Randhawa, Mountain Mike’s Pizza, Travelopod and PNG jewelers. Desi 1170 was the radio partner of the event.
